On Tuesday, April 15, 2008, The Dallas VA Medical Center immediately shut down its psychiatric wing in response to four (4) patient suicides that have occurred since January of this year:  two inpatient suicides and two post-discharge suicides.  Joseph Dalpiaz, Director of the VA North Texas Health Care System -  Dallas VA Medical Center, ordered the closure to evaluate the safety of the unit.  Break the Silence commends Mr. Dalpiaz and his administrators for this brave and necessary action and their commitment to improving inpatient safety.  More hospitals need to do the same and follow suit.  It would save lives.  This is our goal.
